The rock comedy musical is set in Hollywood at the end of the 1980s, and the party has been raging hard.
It was a time when big bands with big egos were playing big guitar solos and sporting even bigger hair.
Aqua net, lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx (the character played by Tom Cruise in the movie of 2012) takes the stage and scantily-clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality.
Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing. He also falls for small-town girl, Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes.
But the rock and roll fairytale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist mall.
Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late?
Director Jillian Logan has been waiting to bring this show to life for the past eight years.
“The moment I heard the soundtrack somewhere around 2010, I was hooked,” Logan said.
“It’s fun, it’s upbeat, it’s cheeky, it’s all the well-known 80s songs. It is one of the best nights out at the theatre you could possibly have – it’s like half rock concert, half comedy show.”
The show boasts a dynamic young cast, and the creative team includes choreographer Gareth Davis, and musical director Quinn Carter, an HSC student who has been prominent in Star Struck and the Schools Spectacular.
Rock of Ages opens on Friday night, May 25, at 7.30pm.
There are performances on Saturday, May 26, at 1.30pm and 7.30pm; then Thursday, May 31, at 7.30pm; Friday, June 1, at 7.30pm; and Saturday, June 2, at 1.30pm and 7.30pm.
