Rathmines Area Sustainable Neighbourhood Group will screen the movie at the Catalina Conference Centre on Saturday, May 25, at 5pm.
The documentary considers what it’s like to try going one day without using plastic.
It uses humour and an engaging host to reveal that plastic is everywhere and infiltrates our lives in unimaginable and sometimes frightening ways.
It follows 'everyman' Jeb Berrier as he embarks on a global tour to unravel the complexities of our plastic world.
“What starts as a film about plastic bags evolves into a wholesale investigation into plastic and its affect on our waterways, oceans, and even our own bodies,” the preview for the documentary said.
“We see how our crazy-for-plastic world has finally caught up to us and what we can do about it.”
Janet White from Ocean and Coastal Care Initiative will introduce the documentary.
After the screening, there will be a free barbecue. Locals are invited to enjoy the night with their neighbours.
The screening is part of the Rathmines Park Litter Project.
The project - supported by a Keep NSW Beautiful community litter grant, and Lake Macquarie City Council - recently resulted in the installation of four litter and recycling bins at Rathmines Park, near the F Jetty.
RASNG member Barbara Hicks said the group was rapt to receive $5000 through the Keep NSW Beautiful community litter grant scheme.
As part of the application process, she was required to first conduct a litter check of the area, to determine the extent of the littering problem. A follow-up litter check will be done in the park shortly.
“Because the original check was done in summer, I don’t think we’ll find as much litter next time,” Ms Hicks said.
Meanwhile, the RASNG bag swap project at Rathmines shops is also helping to reduce consumption of single-use plastic bags.
