Lake Macquarie City Council and Greater Bank will stage the family-focused live site, which will feature a big-screen telecast of the A-League grand final between the Newcastle Jets and Melbourne Victory.
Lake Macquarie mayor Councillor Kay Fraser said the live site would have a wonderful atmosphere and give the community the opportunity to show their collective support for the home team.
“Having the Jets playing a grand final at home is such an exciting event for our region and council is keen to provide a venue where the community can share the fun of the occasion together,” Cr Fraser said.
“We know many local fans were disappointed about being unable to secure tickets to the grand final but the live site will be the next best thing, with a real crowd buzz and all the action playing out live up on the big screen.”
The chief executive officer of Greater Bank, Scott Morgan, said he was delighted to partner with Lake Macquarie City Council to bring the live site to life.
“The groundswell of support for the Newcastle Jets this week has simply been amazing. As the major community partner of the Newcastle Jets, our support has always been about helping the club connect with the community,” Mr Morgan said.
“The live site will be a wonderful opportunity for people across the area to come together and share the incredible experience of the A-League grand final.”
Cr Fraser thanked the Greater Bank, Southern Cross Austereo, Newcastle Jets, Football Federation Australia, the Lake Macquarie Local Police District, Fox Sports, Inspirations Paint and Northern NSW Football for helping to facilitate the live site at short notice.
The free event will open at 5pm, with pre-match entertainment provided before the kick-off at 7.50pm.
Fans are advised to take blankets or camp chairs. Food and drink vendors will be on site, or fans are welcome to pack a picnic.
Parking options include marked spaces around Speers Point Park and the Speers Point Swim Centre, the Lake Macquarie Football Facility car park, and the council administration building car park in Main Road, Speers Point, which is about five minutes’ walk from the live site.
There is also ample parking in marked spaces along Creek Reserve Road, Speers Point.
