The Scorpions are the defending NSW Challenge Cup champions after having defeated Glebe Burwood in the final of last year’s inaugural competition.
At Dora Creek, the Scorpions trailed 16-10 at halftime, but could not contain the visitors in the final two quarters.
The Scorpions started poorly making numerous errors in the first quarter, allowing the bigger Glebe Burwood side to get field position.
When Macquarie regained the ball, they found it hard to get out of their own territory in the first two quarters.
The lack of possession and the size of the opposition eventually told on the Scorpions and Glebe Burwood took control late in the game.
Scorpions’ coach Adam Bettridge said although he was disappointed with the result he could not fault the commitment put in by the side.
“We could not control the ball in the first two quarters and the penalty count was always against us leaving us with very little ball and field position, and it was inevitable that we would tire late in the game,” he said.
“To still be in the game at halftime after continually defending our line in that first half convinced me that we will be very competitive again in 2018.
“We have recruited very well in the off season and the new players have been very strong for us in the trials.
“We will be going into the first round on Saturday injury free in the top grades and everyone has been putting in at training which gives me and the other coaches confidence that we will have a strong year.”
The Scorpions kick off their 2018 Newcastle Rugby League campaign this Saturday against Lakes United at Lyall Peacock Field, Toronto, with first grade starting at 3.30pm. The under-19s start the action at 11.30am.
