The traffic lights would replace the existing painted pedestrian crossing outside the main shopping strip on the street.
The community is invited to provide feedback on the plans.
“The NSW Government has allocated $500,000 for a proposal to install mid-block traffic lights on Dora Street to help pedestrians safely cross the road,” an RMS spokesperson said.
In the five years to October 2017, there were two incidents in which pedestrians were struck and injured by cars at the location. The Lakes Mail has also received reports from residents of several near misses at the crossing.
“The proposal also involves installing kerb extensions and ramps on both sides of the street to improve access and line of sight for pedestrians at the traffic lights, and minimise impacts on parking,” the spokesperson said.
Seven parking spaces would be removed to allow safe use of the traffic lights by pedestrians and motorists.
Six parking spaces would be reinstated around 20 metres west of the traffic lights, when the existing painted pedestrian crossing was removed, they said.
Feedback is sought by Tuesday, April 17, to Roads and Maritime Services, Locked Bag 2030 Newcastle NSW 2300.
“All feedback received will be taken into consideration and the community will be kept updated as the project progresses,” the spokesperson said.
