There was flooding reported in Cardiff, Mayfield, Wallsend and low-lying parts of King Street in Newcastle city centre. Further afield, torrential rain in Dungog saw the State Emergency Service on high alert and the community on flood watch.
Some roads have been closed in Lake Macquarie, and others have had significant water pooling on the driving surface.
Since then the weather hasn’t cleared and many sporting and community commitments on the weekend are being threatened with cancellation, while many more have already been called off or delayed.
SAT: Black Diamond Women’s AFL Gala Day
CANCELLED.
The Black Diamond Women’s preseason gala day, aiming to give newcomers a chance to “get used to match conditions”, has been called off on Saturday.
“Unfortunately we are not in a position to reschedule,” Operations manager Garry Burkinshaw said.
Tulkaba Park, where the gala day was set to be staged, has been inundated with water creating unfavourable playing conditions.
The first matches of the women’s 2018 season will be played on April 7.
SAT, SUN: Northern NSW Football’s SAP Gala Day
CANCELLED.
After consultation with Coffs Harbour City Council, both Northern NSW Football and Coffs Harbour City Council have decided to CANCEL the Telstra SAP Gala Day this weekend.
NNSWF has taken into consideration the predicted rainfall within the next 48 hours within the Coffs Harbour and greater regions as well as the road conditions for participants travelling to and from Coffs Harbour with a number of main roads already being closed as a result of flooding and/or other circumstances.
The next Gala Day will be held on April 29.
SUN: Lake Macquarie’s Art Bazaar, Farmers Markets
CANCELLED.
Hunter Arts Network announced Speers Point Park will be closed this weekend due to the wet weather, which means Art Bazaar, as well as the Farmers Market, is unable to go ahead this Sunday, March 25.
“Our horticulturalists have inspected parks across the City this morning and with more rain forecast today and tomorrow, a decision has been made to close all parks to vehicles across the weekend,” Mr Murray said.
“This unfortunately means the cancellation of events including the Lake Macquarie Farmers Market and Art Bazaar at Speers Point Park, Movie in the Park at Toronto and our Lake Macquarie Family Week live site at Belmont.”
Movie in the Park at Toronto has since been moved under cover at Toronto High School, starting at 5.30pm.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused, however this preventative action is necessary to protect our green spaces from unintended damage,” Mr Murray said.
Rescheduled dates will be announced in the near future.
SAT, SUN: Newcastle District Cricket Association grand final
PENDING.
The Newcastle District Cricket Association first-grade grand final between Wests and Merewether is expected to get underway at some stage across Saturday and Sunday despite the Hunter’s midweek deluge.
Groundsman at No.1 Sportsground pulled back the covers on yesterday morning and worked on the wicket following the week’s heavy rainfall, which included recordings of 70mm at Nobbys Beach and more than 150mm around Wallsend.
