Mining company Centennial Coal made one of its local offices available – a converted house with a garden and covered outdoor area – which proved the perfect location.
“We don’t have a community hall, and we don’t have a park, so when Centennial Coal kindly came forward it was very much appreciated,” Mandalong Community Association president Angela Besant said.
Ms Besant said Centennial Coal’s gesture contributed greatly to the association’s efforts to build community cohesion in Mandalong – which has a population of about 400 – through social events.
“The Christmas party was well attended by about 70 adults and children, and members of the community put a lot of effort into organising the party and providing entertainment with a petting zoo, face painting and a visit from Santa and his elf.”
A delegation of Mandalong Community Association members formally thanked the mining company with the presentation of a certificate.
Centennial Coal project manager Peter Cook said it was a pleasure to support another local organisation.
The company also sponsored a range of local schools and community events and groups including Morisset Show, NAIDOC Day, and Morisset Meals on Wheels, he said.
Centennial Coal also supported Lake Macquarie Heritage College’s Country Fair and Fun Day; Lake Macquarie City Council’s School Environment Awards; the Lotus Education Fund; Morisset Junior Golf Academy and the Morisset Country Club Pro-Am; and South Lakes Carers’ Christmas day lunch.
Ms Besant said Mandalong Community Association hoped to grow its membership, which was currently at about 20.
“We look forward to hosting future events such as movie nights, and social events, so that everyone in Mandalong can feel connected and a part of this terrific little community,” she said.
Among the community projects being followed on the group’s website are an upgrade of Mandalong Road to include a cycle and horse riding track; the establishment of a community centre and park; and the beautification of Mandalong Reserve.
