POLICE have launched an investigation after a man stabbed himself with a knife “several times” as officers went to arrest him at Charlestown Square on Wednesday afternoon.

The man, 22, was tasered by police in an effort to stop him from stabbing himself but he lost consciousness, a police statement said.
Police began resuscitation before paramedics arrived and rushed him to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
The man was wanted over a domestic-related incident, according to police.
The man was approached outside a liquor store at Charlestown Square about 1pm before the incident unfolded.
Police have launched a critical incident investigation.
It will be led by Newcastle City police.
Charlestown Square said the shopping centre remained open but the Canberra Street car park was closed.
“Following an incident in the green car park area earlier today which the Police are currently attending, please note the entrance and exit off Canberra Street is closed until further notice,” a statement said.
“Charlestown Square remains open. Customers are advised to use the Frederick St, Smart St and Pearson St entrances to park in the centre.
“We thank you for your cooperation.”
