Lake Macquarie is the only local council in the region entering the challenge event, and as such is looking to take out the top spot as the political representatives.

Their line-up is a strong one – names like Jake Sylvester, James McMorland, Byron Howarth and Nathan Forster have all joined in the list of competitors representing the Lake Mac council.

Team Lake Mac will be facing off against 19 other corporate teams in a tag-team event that is aiming to raise $120,000 for the Mark Hughes Foundation, a local organisation currently supporting brain cancer research and assisting those affected by the life-changing disease.

Council’s leisure services manager, Brad Sutton, said joining the Evolution Charity Cup was a “great way for council to support a good cause”, while also showing off lifeguarding skills.

“We are lucky enough to be spoiled for choice when it comes to selecting a surf team, which demonstrates the high calibre of our lifeguards,” Sutton said.

“This is a great goodwill event and we are encouraging council staff and the Lake Macquarie community to get on board and support the boys.”

Lake Macquarie council has already received plaudits from organisers, and Surfest’s Warren Smith said it was “great to see [them] entering a team in the cup”.

“This is a fantastic iniative from the council, and I hope lifeguards really enjoy the competition,” Smith said.

The Lake Macquarie ‘representative’ team has set a fundraising target of $5,000 to be added to the Evolution Charity Cup pool.
