Lake Macquarie Police said officers responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of South and Lake streets at around 2pm, where a driver was trapped in a vehicle.
Images from the scene show a silver 4x4 vehicle with provisional driver plates overturned just past the intersection near a number of shops, and a dark-coloured sedan with considerable damage to the front stopped in the intersection.
NSW Fire and Rescue Crews from Tingira Heights and Belmont arrived at the scene at around 2.02pm and worked for around seven minutes to free a driver who was trapped in the overturned vehicle.
Police were working to determine the cause of the accident on Thursday afternoon. The vehicles have been removed from the road and traffic has returned to normal, police said.
