Almost six decades on and his grandson, Luke Garaty, made his debut in the same team’s top grade in the Round 7 match against Hamilton-Wickham at Ron Hill Oval.
The 27-year-old is the current second grade skipper but good form with the bat warranted selection in the winless side.
He has been averaging around 41 with the stick this season, 11 up on his 2016-2017 campaign.
Batting at No 4, Garaty was unlucky to be castled with a first-baller in the first innings.
He bounced back to finish unbeaten on 30 in the second innings.
Garaty was elevated to open the innings with 100-cap veteran Aaron Gray in the second dig as the Kookaburras were asked to follow-on, having made 193 in reply to the visitors’ 8-354.
Garaty helped the home team to 1-51 when stumps was called on Saturday.
