It’s that philosophy that underpins the Shoosh for Kids Week, from October 23 to 29.
The Office of Sport initiative encourages local sporting organisations around the state to use the week to promote positive behaviour among their members, clubs and associations.
In Lake Macquarie, Southlakes Athletics Centre, which is based at the Dora Creek Workers Club oval, is again among the organisations on board.
Southlakes was an enthusiastic supporter of the program in the first state-wide summer version of Shoosh for Kids Week last year.
Club volunteers handed out flyers to parents and carers outlining the initiative’s aims.
Club president Randall Bailey said Southlakes was again proud to take part.
“Athletics aims to create an inclusive environment in which children of all abilities can shine, and campaigns such as Shoosh for Kids highlight the need for everyone involved to create a positive environment by modelling good behaviour,” Mr Bailey said.
The campaign is well supported across many sports in the Westlakes district.
“I know Westlakes District Netball Association was among the clubs which took part in the winter version of Shoosh for Kids this year, and Southlakes Athletics Centre is looking forward to taking part again this time,” he said.
“Many parents will have kids in both sports, so we urge our members, and those in the community across the western side of the lake, to look out for the campaign which also has baseball, basketball, cricket, gymnastics, touch football, tennis, softball and swimming involved.”
