A large section of Toronto Multipurpose Centre, in Thorne Street, is now vacant and available to rent.
The space includes a main recreation room, two offices, toilets and showers (including for people with disabilities), a laundry, kitchen, and storage room.
Jo Groth is part of the volunteer management committee which leases the building from Lake Macquarie City Council.
Ms Groth said the space had become available after the departure in July of Anglican Care who has shifted their Alkira Respite Service, for people with dementia and their carers, to their Kilpatrick Court facility in Toronto.
She said the space had proved ideal for the dementia respite care service, so would be well suited to a similar service, or any organisation involved in the provision of care through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
“Anglican Care had been a longtime tenant of the building and they provided an excellent service here for people with varying degrees of dementia,” Ms Groth said.
“They’d do all sorts of great stuff with their clients here, and it was a really nice and happy atmosphere when they were in the building.”
The space is secure, with coded gates, and a storage shed.
“And it opens out to a fenced back courtyard with a barbecue and outdoor seating.”
Inside, the space is equipped with a television, washing machine and dryer, fridge, dishwasher and convection microwave oven.
Ms Groth said the space would also suit a range of businesses and community organisations.
“It would be an ideal training room for a company.”
The centre’s management committee is seeking about $500 per week for the space.
While the committee would prefer a long-term tenant, they would also consider daily or short-term hiring of the space.
“We have great access to Toronto, it’s walking distance to the shopping precinct, and it’s easy to park here,” Ms Groth said.
Among the other users of the centre are U3A, Toronto Bridge Club, Legal Aid, three specialist employment services, and physical culture groups.
