The service is made possible by a mobile trailer that will travel to locations across the city every month.
Council’s waste, environment and rangers manager, Keith Stevenson, said microchipping was one of the most important things people could do for their dog or cat.
“Having your dog or cat microchipped ensures council rangers can easily identify and return stray or lost animals to their rightful owners,” Mr Stevenson said.
“Starting in October, this new free mobile service will significantly increase the number of microchipped pets in Lake Macquarie and reduce lost pets and fines applied for non-compliance.
“State law requires that all dogs and cats are to be microchipped at 12 weeks of age, so take advantage of this opportunity to have your pet microchipped for free,” Mr Stevenson said.
The fine for an animal that is not microchipped is $275.
The mobile microchipping van will be at.-
- Lions Park, Anzac Parade, Toronto, on Thursday, October 19, from 9am to noon;
- Auston Oval, Dora Street, Morisset, on Thursday, November 23, from 9am to noon; and
- Wyee Oval, Summerhayes Road, Wyee, on Thursday, December 7, from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
Owners should notify council if their address or contact details change, so that the council’s records are up to date.
Free microchipping is available only to Lake Macquarie residents, and identification is required on the day.
Pet owners should ensure that cats are brought in a carry cage, and dogs are on a leash.
