About 7.10pm, a Proton hatchback travelling south and a northbound Ford Laser collided on Freemans Drive.
The 22-year-old driver of the Ford was flown to John Hunter Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopoter with serious internal and leg injuries.
The 19-year-old male driver of the Proton was also taken to the same hospital with internal injuries.
Officers from the Hunter Crash Investigation Unit attended and are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this crash to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
