Toronto Workers Club named as finalist in 2017 ClubsNSW Clubs and Communities Awards | photos | video

EVERY year, Toronto Workers Club allocates $15,000 to stage its annual kids Christmas party at Lyall Peacock Field.

It’s one of the biggest Christmas events in the Westlakes district, featuring rides, refreshments, barbecued treats, lollies and a visit from Santa.

It’s a major undertaking, made possible by a legion of volunteers from the Workers Club – including regular staff, managers and directors - with help from the Macquarie Scorpions rugby league club.

Marketing manager Christine Wenta said local children loved the party, and their parents were always very appreciative.

“We’re often asked why we do it,” Ms Wenta said.

“Especially when the common assumption is we get nothing for it. Our answer will always be: for the love of it.

“It’s the endless thanks the parents provide the volunteers for their child’s happiness. It ultimately is the love of our community,” she said.

That love – displayed over 13 years – has this week been acknowledged by the registered club industry, with Toronto Workers Club being named a finalist in the ClubsNSW 2017 Clubs and Community Awards in the arts and culture category.

The awards ceremony will be held in Sydney in October.
