A NSW Lotteries official phoned to confirm the man’s win first thing on Tuesday morning.
“I was dead to the world – I was having a bit of a sleep-in! But now I’m happy,” the man said.
“It’s just tremendous! It’s something I’ve always dreamt of but… wow! How about that, hey!”
The regular player explained he had been marking his Monday and Wednesday Lotto entries with his favourite numbers for decades.
He plans to use his million-dollar windfall to help his family, but first he has a promise to fulfil.
“I’ve always joked and promised the girls in the shop where I buy my tickets [Toronto News, on The Boulevarde] that I’d buy them an ice-cream cake if I ever won the Lotto, but now I think I’ll give them two!” he said.
“They’re beautiful people. They’re a lovely family and I’ve been going to them for a long time.”
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, purchased his marked 14-game entry from the newsagency.
Toronto News owner Andrew Fennell said he believed his outlet was the luckiest in Australia, having sold more than 20 division one and top prize-winning entries during the past 30 years.
“It’s fantastic news that we’ve sold another big one,” Mr Fennell said.
“Our customers’ biggest win to date was a $7 million Lucky Lotteries prize in 2013. If I knew what our secret to success was I would have won it myself,” he laughed.
“Congratulations to the winner. It’s great to hear it’s one of our local customers. We wish him all the very best with his prize.”
The winning numbers in Monday and Wednesday Lotto draw 3682 on Monday, July 31, were 28, 4, 27, 8, 35 and 12, while the supplementary numbers were 15 and 26.
