Lake Macquarie City Council adopted the Bernie Goodwin Oval Masterplan in April.
The plan will transform the park with two new playgrounds, including accessible play equipment, new footpaths, a barbecue, picnic area, tables and exercise equipment.
Brooke Armitage reckons its the ideal time to gauge the community’s support for the addition of a Liberty Swing in the makeover.
“The masterplan looks awesome,” Ms Armitage said.
“I’m just asking if we could put a Liberty Swing in there.”
The Liberty Swing enables people in wheelchairs, and with other disabilities, to enjoy the exhileration of riding a swing.
There’s a Liberty Swing in the Lake Macquarie Variety Playground in Speers Point.
That swing was funded by Rotary and installed in partnership with council at a cost of $20,000.
Ms Armitage is hoping local service clubs, business chambers, or individual businesses will see merit in the proposal and help to fund a Liberty Swing for Morisset.
Ms Armitage regularly cares for her friend Danielle Mathie’s son, Shane, who has cerebral palsy.
Shane, 13, and Ms Armitage’s daughter, Ruby, 6, have become friends, but they can’t always play together.
“There’s just such a lack of facilities for disabled kids in this area,” Ms Armitage said.
Travelling to Speers Point regularly isn’t an option for many children with disabilities in the Morisset area, she said.
“A lot of kids with disabilities don’t travel well. For us to travel to Speers Point is an event.”
A spokesperson for council said the design for the Morisset playgrounds had not yet been finalised, but they would include wheelchair-friendly facilities.
“At this stage, that does not specifically include a Liberty Swing but council will consider any proposal that comes to it within the consultation phase of the design,” they said.
