Council’s sustainability manager Alice Howe said Council had now installed solar power systems capable of generating 550kW across its major buildings.
“Council is always looking for ways to save money and reduce our carbon emissions, and solar is a great way to make real and lasting savings,” Dr Howe said.
“Council’s moves to convert to solar will save the city and its ratepayers around $156,000 every year.”
Among the council buildings that have solar panels installed at the council administration centre, Speers Point Swim Centre, Toronto Multi-Purpose Centre, Bolton Point Community Hall, and Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery.
The move has also reduced council’s carbon emissions by 856 tonnes a year.
Residents are also helping make Lake Macquarie City a solar powerhouse in the Lower Hunter, with 14 per cent of homes having solar power systems installed on rooftops around the city.
