1st Byattunga Scouts, of Morisset, gear up for annual black and white-themed trivia night on Friday, May 5

Canoeing, sailing, rock climbing and games are just some of the activities local scouts enjoy at the Baden Powell (BP) Bash at Speers Point.

And the annual BP Bash is just one of the highlights on the busy calendar of events for the district’s scout groups.

The 1st Byattunga Scout Group, in Morisset, is one of the most active scout groups in the area.

It has a long history of helping local young people to learn new skills, develop their leadership qualities, and enjoy healthy, active pursuits.

In January, for instance, Byattunga Scouts (aged 11-14) attended the Lostock Scout Camp for a five-day regional corroboree camp which was attended by more than 500 scouts from the Hunter.

The group’s Cubs (aged 8-11), meanwhile, attended the Cataract Scout Camp for a five-day state ‘Cuboree’ camp with about 2000 cubs from across the state.

On Friday, May 5, the 1st Byattunga Scout Group will hold its annual black and white trivia night at Morisset Country Club, from 6.30pm.

It’s the major annual fundraiser for the group.

Money raised on the night will help to fund local scouts’ participation in scouting activities and events, buy equipment, and cover the upkeep and running of the scout hall.

“There will be games, raffles and prizes and all ages are welcome,” parent committee chairman David Lemcke said.

“As well, there will be prizes for best individual and best decorated table – so dress up in your best black and white theme.”

Former scouts and their families have been invited.

“A call out has gone out to ex-members to come along and say hi, and see if they still have what it takes,” Mr Lemcke said.

Entry costs $15 per person.

The scout group caters for boys and girls aged 6 to 26 years, and meets at the scout hall in Awaba Street.

Mr Lemcke said apart from enjoying adventurous pursuits, scouts gained skills through a range of structured activities “where children can achieve in a non-competitive setting”.
