Police from Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command were conducting an unrelated vehicle stop on Wyong Road at Berkeley Vale, shortly before 10pm on Sunday when they saw a nearby house on fire.
Officers made several attempts to enter the home after initial information indicated a man may have been inside; however, police were forced back due to the intensity of the blaze.
Neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution as Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.
Once the fire was out, evidence of a hydroponic cannabis crop of up to 500 plants was found inside, police said.
The scene has been preserved overnight and will be forensically examined once it is deemed safe to enter the scene.
There have been no reports of anyone missing from the home.
Anyone with information should call Wyong Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
