“We started getting 22 playing members to our social competitions on a Wednesday night, so we weren’t closing play until 9 o’clock,” snooker club president Noel Courtney said.
“Now that we have a fourth table we can accommodate extra players.”
The snooker club meets and plays inside Morisset Country Club.
It hosts social competition games on Wednesday nights, and participates in the ‘Old and Bold’ seniors competition on Monday mornings.
Mr Courtney said at a time when other venues were clearing out their snooker tables, Morisset Country Club was expanding facilities for snooker players.
“The support we get from the mother club has been great,” Mr Courtney said.
“Other clubs are getting rid of their tables, but we’ve now got four here.”
The new table was sold to the snooker club for a song thanks to the generosity of a couple from Lambton.
“The table is worth $2500 but we were able to get it for $500,” Mr Courtney said.
During negotiations for the table, a delegation of snooker club members told the young sellers that they could not meet his asking price and could offer only $500.
“Then the man asked us where the table was going, and who it was for. When we told him, he said, ‘OK. I want it to go to a good home. You can have it for $500’.”
The sellers even threw in eight cues, snooker and billiard balls, two long rests, a light, jiggers and scoreboard as part of the deal.
Club members praised the couple for their generosity.
Members also arranged for the company Superior Billiards to install the table at a discounted rate.
Mr Courtney said the snooker club had members aged from 22 to 86, and from all walks of life.
Women are invited to join, and would be made welcome by the blokes, he said.
“Snooker is a gentleman’s game,” Mr Courtney said, and that means gentlemanly behaviour is expected.
“We don’t allow swearing, and anyone who displays a bad temper will receive a warning, and if it continues, they can be suspended,” he said.
No snooker experience is necessary, and absolute beginners are encouraged.
