Lake Macquarie City Council has secured a NSW Community War Memorials Fund grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs for the assessments.
Council’s integrated planning manager Sharon Pope said the war memorials – at Killingworth, West Wallsend and Speers Point Park – were an important part of our military heritage and honour the sacrifices of local servicemen.
“Unfortunately over the years, time and the weather have taken their toll on the marble, sandstone and iron that make up these memorials,” Ms Pope said.
“The grant funding, along with funding from our Local Heritage Grant program, will help us to carry out specialist assessments of the required conservation works for each memorial.
“The conservation assessment will identify works that can be undertaken by council and those that require conservation professionals. It will also help us to program maintenance and conservation works, and support applications for grant funding for specialised conservation treatment.”
She said the conservation works would help protect and preserve the important community heritage items into the future.
The NSW Government established the Community War Memorials Fund to help protect and conserve war memorials across NSW.
