And she’s not fazed.

“It’s because we treat everyone as if they’re a mystery shopper,” she said.

“We want everyone to tell their friends that they had a great experience here, and got good value for money.”

Ms McGovern and her mum Maryann Woods run Total Beauty and Health, at Boolaroo.

The business is a finalist in three categories – Sustainable Business Practices, Retail Practices, and Workplace Health and Safety - while Ms McGovern is also nominated personally in the Young Business Person of the Year category.

Ms McGovern said simply entering the awards was worthwhile from a business perspective.

“We’d definitely encourage other local businesses to get involved.

“It really gave us the opportunity to look at our business as a whole,” she said.

By answering questions on the awards application form, businesses are prompted to shine the spotlight on all aspects of their operations.

“The application process is a good way to assess where you’re at, and where you need to be,” Ms McGovern said.

Total Beauty and Health offers all of the services you’d expect from a beautician, including massage, manicure, pedicure, facials, waxing, Reiki healing and aromatherapy.

It also has a skin analysis machine, and schools clients in skin care.

Its standardised pricing system means that all half-hour treatments cost the same, and all hour-long treatments cost the same – which is particularly handy for gift-card recipients.

Ms Woods said her daughter was a natural in the role.

“By trade, Liz is a special needs teacher and we both later trained as beauty consultants,” she said.

Ms McGovern is now also studying for a diploma in traditional Chinese medicine.

Ms Woods said her daughter brought a compassion to her work which resonated with all clients and made them feel comfortable.
