The chips can be electronically scanned, revealing information about the pet’s registration, owners, and address.
Lake Macquarie residents can have their pets microchipped for free next Saturday, July 9.
Council rangers will host the event at PETstock, Warners Bay, from 9.30am to 2pm.
Microchipping is one of the most important things you can do for your dog or cat.
“State law requires that all dogs and cats are to be microchipped at 12 weeks of age, and registered by six months of age,” council’s ranger services co-ordinator, Steve Barry, said.
Because pet registration and microchipping is the law, if a council ranger identifies you as an owner of an unregistered animal, you may receive a fine.
It’s also important for owners to notify council if their address or contact details change, so council records can be updated.
Free microchipping is available only to Lake Macquarie residents and ID will be required on the day.
“Please ensure that cats are in a carry cage and dogs are on a leash. All animals must be eight weeks or older,” a council spokesperson said.
Residents with large litters are asked to contact council’s rangers prior to the day on 4921 0333.
Residents can also register their dog or cat on the day. Credit card and Eftpos payments will be accepted.
Locals can opt to make an appointment to have their pet microchipped at the council’s depot facility, which has an appropriate area for carrying out the procedure, or at their home for a fee of $37.
The RSPCA and local vets can also perform the procedure.
