Mr Berry, of Yarramalong, won for his remarkable painting, Boomanjin Reeds.
The Lakes Mail saw the painting up close, and reported that it looked, at first, like a photograph offering a glimpse into a lakeside ecosystem.
So lifelike and real is its 3D effect that the viewer is tempted to reach in and hold open the reeds to get a better look.
Mr Berry earned a degree in fine art in Melbourne during the 1970s under the tutelage of artists such as Victor Matzner, Geoff La Gerche, John Davis and Ian Armstrong.
He spent several years teaching in Victoria, eventually moving to Hervey Bay in Queensland where he started working as a professional artist.
As demonstrated in Boomanjin Reeds, Mr Berry derives inspiration from his environment, and his work demonstrates a fascination for the complexity of design in nature.
He has had solo exhibitions and commissions and has exhibited widely in Australia. He has works in private collections around the world and curates and judges art shows and festivals around the country.
Entries in the art section of this year’s festival close on Saturday, April 16. Entries in the craft section close on Thursday, April 14.
- This year’s festival will be held at Wangi District Workers Club from Friday night, April 29, to Sunday afternoon, May 1.
