The opening ceremony to the Lake Macquarie International Children's Games at Speers Point Park on Sunday night featured plenty of colourful and spectacular moments.
But the highlight for many was when schoolgirl Mia Sifflet, 14, braved a downpour to perform the song she wrote for the Games.
The song, Never Give Up, took on added meaning as the local singer and her backing dancers gave it their all.
Mayor Jodie Harrison said while it was disappointing that rain forced the opening ceremony to be shortened, it did not dampen the enthusiasm of those involved on the night.
"The ceremony opened with the parade of athletes, which was an incredible sight to see," Cr Harrison said.
"Athletes from around the world showed their excitement and passion for the Games as they marched in their team uniforms.
"This was followed by a moving performance by Christine Anu of her Australian favourite, My Island Home, but the stand out of the night was Mia's passionate performance of the Lake Macquarie International Children's Games theme song even in the pouring rain," she said.
ARIA award-winning band, Sheppard, closed the ceremony performing their hit song Geronimo before the fireworks finale, which was brought forward to 7.30pm.
The Newcastle Permanent's Carols by Candlelight went ahead as planned with a dedicated crowd who sat through more rain.
