Water pressure dwindles, rendering domestic garden hoses almost useless, and the electricity supply often fails.
"In a bushfire crisis, you must have an independent water supply and an independent power supply if you want to be able to keep your home safe yourself," irrigation specialist Mark Osborne said.
Mr Osborne has recently joined forces with local roofing expert Adam Johnson to form the company All Safe Roof Irrigation, at Wangi Wangi.
The pair custom design and install rooftop sprinkler systems which produce a protective deluge of water in the event of bushfire.
"Our system operates with an independent water supply and an independent power supply," Mr Osborne said.
"During a bushfire firefighters need the town's mains pressure water, so it means homeowners out there with their garden hose will often just get a dribble of water coming through," he said.
All Safe Irrigation systems tap water from a 22,000-litre water tank which is installed solely for the purpose of fire protection.
"The water in this tank is not used for the garden, or for flushing toilets," Mr Osborne said.
A petrol-powered pump gets the water moving through copper piping to where it's needed.
"Our sprinklers create a deluge, producing the heaviest water droplets for maximum protection."
Water floods the home's gutters, providing an important barrier to ember attack, and 50 per cent of the water is reticulated for pumping back into the sprinklers.
The sprinklers can be manually activated, or set off by a heat globe which triggers the pump to start when a critical temperature is reached.
The sprinklers can even be activated by a decoder, meaning the home owner can phone in the command to start the deluge.
Mr Osborne said the interest in the new bushfire protection system had been "overwhelming".
He said the cost of an All Safe Roof Irrigation bushfire protection system was less than $10,000 for an average house.
