In many ways, Saturday's local derby was a throwback to the tribal rugby league of yesteryear.
Physical and verbal domination were priorities.
And ball control, defensive technique and game plans were the casualties.
But for the most part the fans loved it.
"It was a pretty sloppy affair," Dora Creek coach Brian Finlay conceded.
"And because the teams played against each other in a very physical clash in the Charity Shield a fortnight ago, I think players from both sides were still a bit sore."
Morisset coach Rod Bird said emotion was forever destined to play a dominant role in the local derby.
"Unfortunately, I think that is always going to be the case because a lot of players from both sides are mates, and they pass each other every day in the street," Bird said.
Dora Creek led 12-nil at the break, although Morisset had reason to feel unlucky as they had two "tries" disallowed.
Early in the second stanza, Morisset had another chance to score in the left corner when fullback Mitch Kauffman split the Swampies defence on the 20-metre line, but could not pass the ball to his supports before he was tackled short of the line.
Bird said luck deserted his men. "Our guys need to realise that they've got to hang in there and be patient," he said.
The absence of centre Kelly Hall and hooker Jake Deaves had also robbed Morisset of strikepower and creativity.
He nominated Kauffman, pivot Nathan Cliff and prop Greg "Chookie" Fowell as among his team's best.
Finlay praised prop Justin Ferris and skipper Ben Wrigley and said his team's defence had earned the win.
"Our line defence was unbelievable considering how much ball we turned over," he said.
"I can see so much improvement to come. In three or four weeks, you won't recognise this team."
Fans might not recognise the team this Saturday when Dora Creek takes on West Wallsend at Les Wakeman Oval.
Nine Swampies will be unavailable, including six who will be at a wedding.
Morisset has the bye.
