Once a year, on the first Tuesday in November, Australians gather to enjoy the tradition that is Melbourne Cup day.
The race first ran in 1861, it began as a result of one upmanship when two Melbourne race clubs had a spat.
That year, 17 horses competed for 710 gold sovereigns.
The race has now evolved into the richest of its kind in the world, with prize money now topping the $6 million mark.
Thoroughbreds are flown in from all corners of the globe to compete with Australia’s best in the hopes of claiming the unique, three-handled, 18 carat gold Melbourne Cup.
But, off the track, it’s also a day of glitz and glamour – whether you’ve snagged yourself a spot trackside at Flemington or you’re watching all the action on a big screen with friends or workmates, there are a few traditions worth observing:
Pick a winner.
It’s the one day of the year when it doesn’t matter if you know one end of a horse from the other.
Picking a Cup winner is notoriously difficult, so just have some fun.
Go the grey horse, the sentimental favourite, the runner with the catchiest name, or try your luck and join a sweep.
Frock up.
Cup day is a wonderful excuse to dress up in your Sunday best - after all, this country's most prestigious horse race is as much about the fashion as it is the field.
And don’t forget your hat or facinator.
Do lunch.
Get together with family, friends or workmates and savour a long, leisurely lunch.
Located near the shores of Lake Macquarie the Bay Motel at Fishery Point in Bonnells Bay, might just be the perfect place to take a punt this coming Melbourne Cup day.
Known for it’s first class food and accommodation, the lunch on race day promises to deliver the same quality and indulgence.
With a delicious 2 course menu on offer of either blue-eyed cod or roast lamb rump (alternate drop) and a choice of two mouth watering desserts, you feel like a winner, no matter what the race brings.
Lunch is $45 per head and bookings are essential. Children are also welcomed with groups in the beer garden area.
With a free mystery trifecta for every guest, a glass of beer, bubbles, wine or soft drink on arrival and a raft of sweeps, trivia, lucky door and fashion prizes there’s plenty for everyone to enjoy.
