The council is encouraging residents to do their bit to help protect native wildlife by signing up to the program.
Council’s sustainability manager, Alice Howe, said members of the Backyard Habitat for Wildlife program received two free native plants to help them establish a wildlife oasis on their property.
“This week is National Gardening Week, the perfect time for residents to get out into their backyard, garden or onto their balcony and create habitat for our local wildlife,” Dr Howe said.

“Native gardens are a win-win outcome. In addition to providing food and habitat for our native fauna, spending time in the garden benefits our health. Studies have shown it can reduce stress and even help ward off conditions like osteoporosis, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s.”
More than 2300 Lake Macquarie residents are already enjoying the benefits of the program.
New members also receive a Backyard Habitat Planting Guide, a sign for their garden gate, and discounts at participating nurseries and the Landcare Resource Centre, as well as helpful gardening information and resources.
