Hat Day is an initiative of Rotary to raise money to fund research into depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses.

Rotary District 9670 Governor, Helen Ryan, said Hat Day was part of Rotary’s commitment to ‘Lift the Lid on Mental Illness’ during October, which is Mental Health Month.

“Hat Day is an opportunity for Rotarians and members of the community to wear a crazy hat and host an event to open up the discussion on mental health,” Mrs Ryan said.

“The research shows that one in five people experience a mental illness each year. We need to ensure we can continue to fund programs and projects so that will reduce this statistic and give people hope.

‘Lift the Lid on Mental Illness’ is a new national mental health fundraising and awareness initiative of Australian Rotary Health.

It aims to raise funds for mental health research and ultimately improve the lives of all Australians.

“Rotarians recognise the importance of supporting those in the community who suffer a mental illness,” Mrs Ryan said.

“We want to live in a society where people don’t feel ashamed that they suffer from a mental illness.

“I am encouraging businesses and workplaces in Lake Macquarie to host a Hat Day event.”

Locals can also host a cake stall, car wash, or sausage sizzle to support the cause.
