Council does this by developing programs and policies that promote environmentally responsible behaviour in areas such as building practices, waste management, and water and energy use. We also providing infrastructure that promotes active transport and healthy lifestyles, among many other initiatives.
Our annual Living Smart Festival offers residents the chance to discover ways they can introduce sustainable ideas and practices into their own lives. This year’s Living Smart, at Speers Point Park on Saturday 23 September, offers a great program.
We will have television chef Paul West presenting sustainable cooking ideas, tiny houses on display, permaculture demonstrations, a native plant giveaway, group outdoor yoga classes, market stalls featuring local produce and products, kids’ activities and free entertainment.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to see some of the improvements that have been made to Speers Point Park in recent months, including the new promenade and improved park facilities, shelters and amenities.
Living Smart is the Hunter’s premier sustainability event. If you are interested in learning more about the small steps you can take towards leading a more sustainable life, don’t miss this fun, free festival.
Women’s leadership
I had the pleasure of welcoming guests from across NSW and the ACT to our region last Friday night for the Zonta District 24 Conference.
Zonta is a wonderful organisation that empowers women and promotes women’s issues – causes that are close to my heart.
As a female leader in government, I am one of many female Mayors and MPs in our region, but it is not that long ago that it was rare to find a woman in these roles.
So, it is important that we continue to have organisations like Zonta championing the cause of women and encouraging women of all generations to take leadership roles and effect positive change.
