But in the short term, at least, cafes and restaurants at the eastern end of The Boulevarde are set to endure some disruption as council’s work crews encroach on their streetfront areas.
Work has begun on Stage 5 of the council’s $4.1-million Toronto Streetscape Master Plan.
Crews will work eastward from Pemell Street to the corner of Victory Parade over the next 12 weeks, weather permitting.
This stage will see the continuation of themes and treatments from the previous section of works.
“New kerb, footpaving and decks will enhance opportunities for outdoor dining, and provide a long-lasting and more easily maintained asset,” a spokesperson for the council said.
“Council’s construction crews will carry out a mix of night and day works to minimise disruption to trade and pedestrians as much as possible.”
Council’s city projects manager, Adam Wakeman, said the Toronto Streetscape Master Plan was a major project for the area.
“We’re about two-thirds of the way through this important project that will help modernise the Toronto town centre, improve access, and generate new opportunities for economic activity,” Mr Wakeman said.
“Council thanks the community for its ongoing support and co-operation while we carry out these works.”
Meanwhile, Toronto Chamber of Commerce has received an $11,000 grant through the federal government’s Stronger Communities Program to fund works on the northern side of The Boulevarde.
Chamber secretary Brenda Hartmire said Work for the Dole participants had begun work under the management of Toronto Men’s Shed.
The work will include cleaning, paving and garden enhancement to match the gardens planted by council on the southern side of the street.
“The restaurants are excited by how it will all look when the work is finished, because they will benefit by quite a lot,” Ms Hartmire said.
