The complex was named winner in the Aged Care category of the UDIA’s NSW Excellence Awards, announced on Friday.
The facility provides high care and dementia care for 147 residents.
Judges said the building provided a “beautiful living environment”, with view corridors to Mt Sugarloaf, Lake Macquarie and Toronto that maintain a “constant connection to the world outside”.
Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser, who attended the official opening of Kilpatrick Court in May, said the complex was an example of groundbreaking and thoughtful urban design.
“Aged care and retirement living are growing areas of development in Lake Macquarie and council welcomes innovatively designed buildings like this that enhance both the urban landscape and the wellbeing of residents,” she said.
“I congratulate Anglican Care and architects Jackson Teece on embracing the challenge of designing a facility that feels warm, welcoming and home-like, while also providing for the complex needs of high-care residents.”
Speaking at the official opening of the building, Anglican Care’s chief executive officer Colin Osborne said the functional design and aesthetic appeal of the building, coupled with the standard of care provided by staff, meant that Kilpatrick Court was a place where people were happy for their ageing mothers and fathers to live.
“This facility reflects a standard of environment that supports contemporary delivery of aged care services,” he said.
“It’s a safe environment for our residents. It’s a safe environment for our staff. It’s a very pleasant environment from an aesthetics perspective.
“And quite simply, and importantly from my perspective, it will meet the ‘my mum or dad’ test.”
Mr Osborne said the next project on Anglican Care’s development agenda was its C A Brown facility, in Booragul. There are also plans to build retirement living units on land next to Kilpatrick Court.
Anglican Care was also in the process of acquiring properties in Gloucester and Bulahdelah, he said.
Kilpatrick Court is named after a former mayor of Lake Macquarie and long-time Anglican Care chairman, John Kilpatrick, and his family.
The name also recognises the dedicated community contributions of Mr Kilpatrick’s wife, Ellen Kilpatrick, who is a Freeman of the City of Lake Macquarie.
