Ms Hornery said her office had received a number of reports about a scam operating in the area involving people transferring money to callers claiming to be Telstra or other telecommunications firms.
They had also posed as Facebook computer technicians offering help with bugs or errors.
Scamwatch received 15,200 calls in June alone, accounting for more than $7.9 million handed to fraudulent operators.
Ms Hornery said it was vital that residents remained sceptical, urging them to hang up and call the purported company back if they had any doubts.
“Be on alert for anything dodgy,” she said.
“Check emails thoroughly before you click on any links. If you have any suspicions, delete the email immediately.”
“Simple things like choosing complex passwords and updating them regularly can make all the difference.”
