The congestion is likely to clear soon.
8.15AM: One southbound lane has re-opened at Kariong but Hunter drivers are still warned to expect delays heading towards Sydney.
Clean-up operations remain in place, with debris and “a large fuel spill” hindering efforts to re-open the motorway.
Southbound motorists are advised to use the Peats Ridge Road detour outlined earlier, with the Old Pacific Highway also an option.
Earlier: The M1 Pacific Motorway is shut to southbound traffic near the Kariong Interchange.
The lanes closed for a second time on Wednesday morning shortly before 7.30am following a truck crash.
“There are significant delays and motorists should factor in plenty of extra travel time,” the NSW Transport Management Centre said.
“Emergency services and traffic crews remain on site carrying out a clean up operation due to a large fuel spill.”
Motorists are being diverted at Peats Ridge Road.
Drivers headed towards Sydney can then rejoin the motorway at Calga.
