But new facilities associated with the construction of a boardwalk there are going to take the fish-and-chips experience to a new level for the lakeside town.
The boardwalk, a key initiative of Central Coast Council’s Budgewoi Masterplan, will run along the waterfront of Budgewoi Creek, near Budgewoi Circle.
Council administrator Ian Reynolds said the boardwalk was integral to the reactivation of the Budgewoi town centre.
“Budgewoi is a very important part of the Coast and much-loved for its relaxed coastal village atmosphere,” Mr Reynolds said.
“Council has listened to the community and is delivering a project that will help re-activate this popular part of the Coast so it is attractive to both residents and tourists alike.”
Council is investing more than $600,000 on the project which is due to open in July.
Works include a new floating pontoon with concrete decking and gangway, as well as a fixed timber jetty.
The nearby footpaths are being replaced and a section of the rockwall will be rebuilt, greatly improving the overall amenity of the area.
The existing tables and seating have been refurbished, and new bin enclosures installed.
The worksite is currently closed to pedestrians, with fencing and signage in place.
Budgewoi Circle is home to an array of eateries, including cafes, a pizza restaurant, Thai restaurant, two excellent fish and chip shops, and Coast Hotel.
Currently, there are limited spots at which to enjoy take away fare near the water at Budgewoi Circle. Many locals and visitors opt, instead, to take their fish and chips to nearby Mackenzie Reserve where there are ample tables and chairs on the lake’s edge.
The new facilities being built at Budgewoi Circle are likely to change that.
“The works are aimed at improving the site’s recreational and aesthetic values, providing boat access, and ensuring safe, long-term use for pedestrians, fishermen and other visitors to the area,” Mr Reynolds said.
The Masterplan has 33 initiatives to enhance the distinctive character of the Budgewoi Village, including creating dedicated public spaces, facilitating pedestrian and cyclist activity, and encouraging greater utilisation of the public space.
“We have just released our draft Operational Plan which will see Council spend a record amount on improving open spaces and recreational areas across the Coast,” Mr Reynolds added.
