Wangi Lions Club spokesman Jim Wilson said the fitness trail would be a good fit for the town.
“Wangi has a higher than average portion of its population in the 55-plus age group, and the foreshore path is a very popular site for daily exercise and walking,” Mr Wilson said.
“The stations will be spaced along the foreshore and are specifically designed more to enhance and improve mobility and flexibility rather than strength.”
The stations feature low-profile apparatus to be used in a range of exercises.
Mr Wilson said they would be supplied by Fitness Trails Australia, which had installed similar stations in more than 70 council areas in Australia.
“The construction uses recycled plastic and stainless steel and is suitable for waterfront use.”
The state and federal governments have supported the plan, and the club is now liaising with Lake Macquarie City Council to gain the necessary approvals.
“We have been fortunate to receive $20,000 in funding from the federal government via the Stronger Communities Program, and a further $25,000 in funding from the state government via the Community Building Partnership program,” Mr Wilson said.
The total cost of the project is budgeted at more than $55,000.
“Wangi Lions Club firmly believe this will be a valuable addition to the community and fits well with the Lake Macquarie City Council’s goals of providing convenient, accessible, appropriate community wellbeing facilities,” he said.
The project could be completed by August.
A spokesperson for council said residents looking to stay fit and active would be pleased to learn about the proposal.
Council’s community planning manager John Ferguson said the plan had merit.
“Static outdoor gyms are geared towards low-impact exercise, making it perfect for those recovering from injury or beginning a new fitness journey,” Mr Ferguson said.
The proposed gym locations will be easily accessible and available for all members of the Wangi Wangi community.
“Council is supportive of the equipment being installed, we’re just checking in with the community about the proposed installation locations between Wangi Wangi Workers Club and Wangi Wangi RSL Club.”
Feedback received by June 2 will assist council and the Lions Club to proceed with the project.
