Heritage College Lake Macquarie wants Lake Macquarie’s 5 cent coins as part of a world record bid.
The school, in Morisset, is backing the Love Your Sister and Big Heart Challenge.
The Love Your Sister campaign was launched by Gold Logie-winning actor Samuel Johnson in support of his sister, Connie, who is dying from cancer.
The school’s communications officer James Lynch said Connie was first diagnosed with cancer at age 11, then at 22, and again at 31.
“When she was first diagnosed with breast cancer, she dared her brother to ride a unicycle around Australia to raise money for cancer research and awareness of breast cancer,” Mr Lynch said.
Samuel set a world record and raised more than $1 million for cancer research.
“Now Connie is in the position of having to cease all treatment for her cancer and would like to set her own world record.”
The world record for the longest line of coins was set in Austria in 2011 at over 75km. Connie is planning to break this record and also raise money for cancer research at the same time.
She is collecting 5 cent pieces and they will be placed in a love heart shape at the Lyneham netball courts, in Canberra, on May 10.
“Heritage College will be doing their own Big Heart Challenge on Friday, May 5.
“Students and staff are collecting all the 5 cent pieces they can find and will be laying out their own big heart on the school basketball court.”
The school is asking the local community to contribute by dropping their 5 cent pieces into the school office any time between 8.30am and 4.30pm.
The Heritage College school address is 85 Ironbark Road, Morisset.
“All funds raised will be banked at the Bendigo Bank to contribute to Connie’s Big Heart Project and will ultimately benefit the Garvan Institute for Cancer Research,” Mr Lynch said.
Samuel Johnson received the Gold Logie at the 59th Logie Awards for his portrayal of music industry legend Ian “Molly” Meldrum in the television miniseries Molly.
