As she glides past Nobbys about 4pm, the Royal Australian Navy frigate will be welcomed back with a seven-gun salute from Fort Scratchley, and the ship will reply with her ceremonial gun. The ship will be in port for Anzac Day, and her crew will play key roles in the city’s commemorative services.
On Monday, the Newcastle’s company of 184 servicemen and women will march through the city centre to exercise its Freedom of Entry to Newcastle.
On Tuesday, the crew will participate in the dawn service at Nobbys then will join hundreds of other serving and former members of the Defence forces for the Anzac Day march to Civic Park.
The frigate is expected to be in port until Wednesday but is not open to the public.
The Newcastle’s commanding officer, Commander Mark Sirois, said members of the ship’s company were looking forward to visiting Newcastle at this important time of the year.
The Newcastle last visited in November.
