The tradition of an Easter bonnet originally stemmed from the idea that new clothes were to be worn at Easter to represent spiritual renewal, inner growth and new beginnings.
Many would forego luxuries during the preceding period of Lent and a new hat to wear to church signified the end of self-denial.
