The Art House at Wyong wants to find out.
The theatre has announced a performance of the controversial but award-winning cabaret Body Map by the Central Coast’s Glitta Supernova, on Saturday, April 22.
The show is billed as “psychedelic, satirical, personal and political storytelling, a hybrid mix of bent burlesque and experimental theatre that’s packed to the rafters with puns, punches and possibilities”.
Supernova is described as Australia’s cult pioneer of performance art.
Shen recently returned to her Umina Beach home from a tour of New Zealand where she performed Body Map at the Dunedin Fringe Festival.
She scored six award nominations at the festival, winning three categories, including the top gong for Best in Fringe 2017.
The Art House performance will be Supernova’s first of what she hopes will be more on the Central Coast.
“I’ve been touring Australia and New Zealand the past four years on the fringe circuit, and haven't been able to bring my show home locally until now, mainly because I haven’t been able to find a suitable venue,” Supernova told the Lakes Mail.
She said she was rapt to be able to bring her brand of red-light comedy and social commentary to the Central Coast in the “world class Art House theatre”.
“It’s about time professional artists had a place which is on the pulse and providing the facilities any theatre-goer would expect,” Supernova said.
“Both the Art House and I are wanting to give the Coast quirky, award-winning, multi-nominated fringe events such as this, and this show will be a real guinea pig for the area.
“Essentially if the appetite is not there these shows will continue to bypass the Coast on their way from Sydney to Newcastle, Brisbane and beyond.”
Provocative, entertaining, funny and shocking, Body Map explores why navigating who we are has never been tougher, Supernova said.
Think of it as “a fun nudie run through a different lens”, spiced with tales of the 1980s and ‘90s, Sydney subculture, and beyond.
“This is cabaret storytelling sprinkled with comedy and a dash of soul food,” she said.
Body Map premiered to sell-out crowds in Perth in February, and sold out its season at this year’s Sydney Mardi Gras.
After the Wyong performance, Supernova will take the show to Newcastle, the Northern Rivers, Sydney and Victoria.
Body Map will be performed in The Studio, at the Art House, on Saturday, April 22, at 8pm. Tickets cost $33 for concessions, students and groups of 10 or more, and $37 for adults.
