Awaba Public School and St Mary’s High School, Gateshead, were named the overall winners of the 2016 Lake Macquarie School Environment Awards at a ceremony held in the council chambers on Friday.

Council’s manager of sustainability Dean Chapman said it was great to see how committed the 24 schools who entered where when it came to improving the local environment.
“It is a credit to teachers and parents to see so many students across the city committed to improving their environment and who are interested in building a more sustainable community,” Mr Chapman said.
Awaba Public School has an environmental management plan designed to help students and the community become more aware about waste management, energy consumption, land management and environmental education.
St Mary’s High School, Gateshead, was acknowledged for its construction of a greenhouse for seed propagation, water use reduction and for its 52 solar panels which power the school.
