The airspace above the Lone Pine fire was abuzz with a winged DC10 water bomber and a further four choppers tasked to the blaze.
So when the rescue chopper took a call for a fallen dirt bike rider just west of the old Ayers Rock rest stop, the crew had to go the extra mile.
The pilot and crew went via Anna Bay to complete a big detour around fire.
They responded to a 19-year-old man who had collided with a tree.
While in a stable condition he had sustained a broken femur.
The man was flown to John Hunter Hospital.
