Words, Words Words is the second of three one-act plays written by David Ives that will be performed each night in a collection dubbed All In The Timing.
“The show (Words, Words, Words) centres around the concept of whether or not three intelligent chimpanzees hitting keys at random on a typewriter could eventually produce Shakespeare's Hamlet,” Newton said.
“As an audience you are given an interesting insight into the conversations and antics of these apes when behind closed doors.”
Newton said she’s enjoyed taking on a multi-layered but deeply funny play as a first-time director.
“The biggest challenge has been in finding a balance between the physical demands of the piece, mixed with the historic references to artists, writers and texts all whilst appealing to a modern-day audience through characterisation of the three chimps, Milton, Swift and Kafka, which is an allusion to famous writers throughout history.
“Although only short, David Ives has written a complex piece and each rehearsal brought to life another reference, implication or joke that we hadn't seen before. This kept me on my toes throughout the whole process and definitely has taught me to always be one step ahead of the script!”
In 2015, Newton applied for Stooged Theatre’s emerging directors program, honed her skills, and earned her stripes as assistant director and performer in several shows.
Newton said audiences would be impressed by All In The Timing.
“If you have been waiting for a fast-paced, hilarious, heart-warming show then this is the one to make time for,” she said.
“Not only does it showcase the best of Newcastle's theatre talent, bringing together an enormous cast of over 20 actors, the 15-minute performances leave your heart full and your tummy sore. As Ben Brantley put it, it’s ‘theatrical tapas’ in its finest form.”
- There are performances at 8pm nightly from Wednesday, November 9, to Saturday, November 12. Tickets cost $25. Phone 4929 1977.
