The lifeguards rode a jet ski through rough seas in a narrow and notorious bay, known as the blow hole, to retrieve the tourists.
Three of the visitors were extracted from the cave in the first approach. The lifeguards then returned to the bay to rescue the remaining two.
Council’s leisure services manager, Brad Sutton, said their skill in negotiating the dangerous conditions exemplified the capability of council’s team of professional lifeguards.
The cave has lured many people into trouble over the years. As the tide and wave surges rise, occupants typically find that the cave is quickly transformed from a tranquil, sandy oasis into a dangerous trap.
