The YMCA’s Brightside program saw a record 53 local people receive important assistance at Lake Haven Recreation Centre in the past year.
Among them was Sandra Hazledine, 31, of Buff Point.
Ms Hazledine was referred to the Brightside program after experiencing postnatal depression.
“The Brightside program gave me a social outlet where I was able to regain my self-confidence after having postnatal depression,” she said.
“Physically, I lost 7 kilograms and gained muscle definition in my arms and shoulders – plus, I was able to pass the NSW Fire and Rescue aptitude test.”
Ms Hazledine continues to keep up her exercise program at Lake Haven after graduating from Brightside.
The program encourages participation in exercise and a healthy lifestyle by offering free and unlimited access to the centre for 60 days, a customised exercise program, and one-on-one support.
Importantly, it’s all provided in a mainstream, community-based environment.
YMCA chief executive officer Leisa Hart said helping participants in a public venue such as the Lake Haven Recreation Centre “removes the stigma of mental illness” and involves participants in their community.
“Almost half of all Australians will experience a mental illness at some point in their lifetime,” Ms Hart said.
“I’m delighted we were able to provide support to 53 people who needed it and sincerely thank Central Coast Council for their assistance through their Community Matching Fund.”
The council’s Community Matching Fund grant of $21,000 had enabled more people to access the important service, she said.
October is Mental Health Month.
It’s a chance for locals to help people with mental health issues by joining Lake Haven Recreation Centre’s ‘10 Days for $10’ offer, with all proceeds going towards the running of the Brightside program there.
“As part of the deal, you will get 10 days access to the health and fitness facilities for only $10,” Ms Hart said.
“I encourage everyone to head to Lake Haven Recreation Centre and sign up for ‘10 Days for $10’ – not only will you feel good through exercise, you will feel great knowing you are helping others dealing with mental health issues through our Brightside program.”
