I’VE thoroughly enjoyed attending my first community events as mayor of Lake Macquarie, and I thought I’d take this opportunity to share an insight into how I spent one of my first days as mayor.

It was an honour to officially open the Winter Swimming Association of Australia national championships at Charlestown Swim Centre.
By all accounts, the event was a great success.
More than 460 swimmers from around Australia enjoyed all that our city has to offer and contributed about $500,000 into the local economy as a result. I also had the privilege of presenting a lifetime membership to Joe Clements at Charlestown Bowling Club.
Another highlight of my first week was cheering on everyone’s favourite local sports team, the Macquarie Scorpions, as they ran out onto Hunter Stadium against South Newcastle in the Newcastle Rugby League grand final.
While we didn’t come away with the win, the team played great and I’m already looking forward to their 2017 season.
It’s at events like these that I relish in my new role of representing the residents of our great city. It’s the people that make Lake Macquarie a great place to live in and visit, and I can’t wait to get out and about over the next four years to celebrate and connect with everyone in our local community.
Finally, as part of recent changes in local government legislation, elected council officials are now required to take an oath or affirmation of office at the first council meeting.
I feel very proud to be the first mayor of Lake Macquarie to make this commitment to you.
I’m confident the years ahead will be full of achievements for our community and I look forward to working alongside my fellow councillors, community groups, businesses and residents to further strengthen our city.
Landcare champions
CONGRATULATIONS to Lake Macquarie Landcare who have taken out the top prize at the National Landcare Awards in Melbourne, being named as part of the best Landcare partnership in Australia.
Lake Macquarie Landcare was recognised for the successful partnership between local Landcare volunteers and Lake Macquarie City Council. The local environmental group was up against eight other nominees from all across the country.
