With an extensive and expanding network of shared pathways providing opportunities for recreational cycling, jogging and walking, our city aims to cater for the growing number of recreational cyclists who live in or visit our region.

The introduction of shared pathways in Lake Macquarie such as the Fernleigh Track, the Eleebana to Booragul lake foreshore path and the Glendale to Wallsend track has led to an increase in cycling among children, adults and families around the city, as well as cycling commuters and athletes.

Well-maintained shared pathways are a vital part of the city’s community infrastructure, and residents confirmed this in the 2016 Community Survey when they overwhelmingly rated shared pathways as a high priority. 

To support even greater levels of participation in cycling as both a leisurely pursuit and a viable means of transport, we have a 10-year strategy that includes expanding the existing network of shared pathways and promoting the use of bicycles among even more residents.

One of our main focuses over the next couple of years will be on delivering the link between the lake foreshore pathway at Speers Point and the existing pathway at Glendale, which then extends right through to Wallsend.

To help discover and explore our city, we’ve also published a brochure with comprehensive maps of local cycling routes. The brochure aims to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle and help us all enjoy what Lake Macquarie City has to offer.

The many attractive and comfortable shared pathway routes offer a safe environment for children and adults, providing a platform for this healthy recreational activity.

Among the shared pathways to explore on the western side of the lake are the Toronto to Fassifern path (Map 7 in the guide), Rathmines (map 8) Wangi Wangi (map 9) and Bonnells Bay to Morisset (map 10).
